You’re hosting your annual Halloween party at home — and you have no idea what you’re going to serve your guests. Outside of the obligatory bowls of candy and pumpkin-flavored whatevers, you want to think outside the box (or coffin) and prepare some truly spooky treats. With that in mind, we collected some of our favorite ghoulish, gory and gross Halloween recipes to get your creepy creativity flowing. Eat at your own risk. Be afraid. Be very afraid.
Dead Man’s Finger Sandwiches
This recipe from Parenting gives new meaning to the idea of “finger foods.” Who knew sliced white bread, margarine, peanut butter, almonds and strawberry jam could look so gross?
Pork Dumplings with Chile-Sauce
The folks at Delish had a bright idea. Soak these wrinkly brain-like dumplings — stuffed with pork, shiitake mushrooms, bok choy, scallions and ginger — in the dipping sauce and serve them in science lab beakers.
This is an oldie but goodie from andreabuckettcooks.blogspot.com. Carve out a sickly pumpkin out and make your own guacamole to simulate the… um… green stuff. We like this classic guacamole recipe.
This one from Martha Stewart should inspire at least one “Ew, gross!” during cocktail hour. Using medium-size radishes and olives, you can create creepy ice cubes that appear to contain eyeballs. Drop one into a martini or a vodka on the rocks, and voila. Instant spook factor.
If you have brains on the brain and don’t have the time to devote to dumplings, buy a brain-shaped mold on Amazon.com and make your own gelatin. Pro tip from Food.com: if you really want to creep out guests, turn your brain gelatin gray by mixing 15 drops of red, green and blue food coloring.
Kitty Litter Cake
Warning: this recipe from allrecipes.com may hit a little too close to home for cat owners. Mix chocolate cake, vanilla sandwich cookies and tootsie rolls and serve in a new kitty litter box with box liner and litter scoop as props to achieve maximum gross-out effect.
Blood Drip Cupcakes
For some people, there is nothing more disgusting than the sight of blood — even fake blood. These Blood Drip Cupcakes from Delish, complete with glass candy and red food coloring, are equal parts delicious and disgusting.
