Hello, first day of summer! (As if Angelenos needed a reminder…thanks to the scorching triple-digit heat wave we’ve enjoyed the last two days). If we are to believe DJ Jazzy Jeff and the Fresh Prince (google it, Millenials!), summer is a time to sit back and unwind. It’s also a time of flip flops and mojitos…of friendly barbecues and lazy weekend mornings spent in your bedroom with nothing but the beach calling your name — which is why you may want to give your bedroom a fresh update. Whether you want to add a rattan chair or head into a full-scale seasonal makeover, here are a few ideas for taking your most personal and private of spaces into “summer summer summertime…”
1. Make Spring Go Poof!
..with new pillows, that is. Infuse your bedroom with some summer garden goodness with a floral-inspired pillow, like this one from Anthropologie. Or, amp up your pillow power by investing in some sea blue-inspired Euro pillows, like these from Bloomingdales, which will instantly give your room a more polished and finished look. If you want to go all out, spring for this bamboo-inspired bedding from Pottery Barn. The vibrant green will make your space feel instantly refreshed — just like the way you felt the last time you encountered bamboo on vacation.
2. Fresh-Cut Flowers
Florist-to-the-stars Jeff Leatham recently told Previews Inside Out: “The ultimate luxury is to have flowers in a home on a weekly basis.” We couldn’t agree more. Now that summer is here, it’s time to bring in Mama Nature with some fresh flowers. If you don’t have your own garden, don’t fret — you can always buy a subscription to Bouqs.com for $40-$70/month. Trust us…these blooms will instantly perk up your summer mood.
3. Bottle it Up
Bring the beach to your bedroom with pretty vintage bottles and jars filled with shells, sand or coastal finds. Everyday you wake up, you’ll feel like you’re on vacation…
4. Sail Away
A bedroom should be a space where you sail away…so why not have a little fun with a nautical theme this summer? You can bring in the style subtly, like with a porthole mirror hung above your bed. Or take it a notch further by adding stripes and more stripes to your decor.
5. Rose-Colored Glasses
Rose quartz — one of Pantone’s Colors of the Year for 2016 — is not only chic, but it’s also considered a neutral because it’s so soft and subtle. Introduce the pretty petal hue to your room one by one, like with this hurricane/candle-holder, or go big — with this pretty-in-pink bedspread.
6. Go Au Natural
Nothing says summer casual like rattan. Swap out your heavy bedroom furniture for a collection made from lightweight textured materials like rattan, wicker or bamboo. This natural banana bark and rattan chair from Pier 1 is a summer must-have, or brighten up your space with this fuchsia wicker stool from World Market, which can double as a nightstand. If you don’t have the money to spend on new furniture, think about moving one or two of your favorite patio pieces next to your bedside.
