You set a certain budget for your house hunt—and you can’t go a penny over it. But what if you want to expand your search a wee bit beyond a specific neighborhood? We decided to play the comparison game by exploring what you can buy for a certain dollar value in various California neighborhoods in a new series we’re calling “Cali Comparables.” We’re going across the Golden State to give you an idea of how far your dollar goes in certain areas.

Last time, we looked at Orange County, where $3.5 million can buy you either acreage or bay views. Moving north and center-of-state, Sacramento may not have those same O.C. perks—but what our state capitol lacks in seaside charms, it more than makes up for in lakeside recreation found at nearby destinations like Lake Natoma, Folsom Lake and Lake Tahoe. Not to mention, the real estate market is a lot more accessible for folks who don’t have million-dollar budgets. So, how much house can you afford in the Sacramento area with a budget of $750,000 (or slightly over/under)? Let’s take a look:
