This year’s MLB All-Star Game may be held in Minnesota, but California baseball fans will have plenty to cheer for. A whopping 16 players from California teams will represent their respective leagues, including a league-leading six players from the Oakland Athletics. The last time the A’s had six players in an All-Star game: 1975.*

Elsewhere in California, the Dodgers are sending four players, including newcomer Yasiel Puig, one of 25 All-Stars making their Midsummer Classic debut. The San Francisco Giants have three representatives, Madison Bumgarner, Hunter Pence and Tim Hudson. The San Diego Padres have Tyson Ross and Huston Street, and Mike Trout will be representing the Los Angeles Angels.

The main show is tomorrow, but the action starts tonight with the Home Run Derby. New this year, there is a seven outs format with bracketed play after the first round. For more information on the recent changes to the Home Run Derby, click here.

Following the splashy spectacle of the Derby, the focus will turn to the seeing how the American League’s best match up with National League’s best and who will win the coveted World Series home field advantage. While injuries and pitching schedules will keep some players from taking the field, fans are already buzzing about many California team favorites. Will Clayton Kershaw strike out Mike Trout? Will Yasiel Puig steal the show? (and how ’bout that hair?) Will Josh Donaldson walk away a household name?
